Hello Supporters,
Sorry we have not posted in a while, we have been busy with school etc. We have some good news as we are meeting Kellogg's next Tuesday on the 16th April and are excited to hear about the progress they have made towards ensuring they only use palm oil from certified clean suppliers!
In some good news, the EU has made moves to reduce palm oil in bio-diesel.
However, this is not straightforward and there have been some diplomatic spats around efforts to get palm oil producers to behave more responsibly:
"What happens when European countries start planning to restrict imports of palm oil because of environmental concerns? A huge diplomatic row, apparently.
From threats to end imports of Norwegian salmon to accusations of “crop apartheid”, the governments and lobbyists in Indonesia and Malaysia have not been happy with the EU over the last two years. That’s not to mention the social media spat triggered by Iceland’s move to remove palm oil from its own-brand products. Read more...
There seem to be some positive things happening in the palm oil world, some other good news is that the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has finally TERMINATED Indofood (Indonesia’s largest food company) and kicked it out of its certification system. This follows years of exploitation of workers and brazen disregard for sustainability.
Anyway, keep sharing and raising awareness around the issue and we will keep you posted on how the meeting goes next week.
Thanks,
Asha, Jia and Harvinder
