The Issue
My local hangout, Universal Joint, is more than just a bar…it's a cornerstone of our community. For those of us who don't work the traditional 9-to-5, finding a place to relax and unwind after a long shift is a necessity. Universal Joint has been that safe haven for many of us, especially the industry employees who spend their days catering to our community. After working tirelessly throughout the day and night, these dedicated individuals deserve a spot to relax and enjoy a drink, just like anyone else. As of now, the bar has shifted to a midnight hard close, 7 days a week. I’m asking for that time to be changed to 2 a.m., Thurs-Sun.
Our neighborhood is bustling with businesses that rely heavily on the people working irregular hours, some of whom are your servers, chefs, and retail employees. We've built relationships with one another that go beyond a regular drink order. Universal Joint is a place where friendships are nurtured, stress is alleviated, and community bonds are strengthened. Unfortunately, with the recent changes in the operating hours, many of us have lost this crucial outlet.
Statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that over 25 million people in America work outside the typical day shift, highlighting a significant portion of the workforce that often feels overlooked. By not accommodating these individuals, we're not just closing doors to a bar, but closing doors to essential social interaction, mental health support, and emotional reprieve.
Our goal is clear and simple: we need Universal Joint to extend its hours to better serve the diverse schedules of our neighborhood residents and workers. By doing so, we create a more inclusive environment that considers everyone's needs and respects the hard work that contributes to the vibrancy of our community.
