Keep The Wel "The Wel"

The Issue

This petition is to stop the rebranding of "The Wel" to "Fairfield Metro at Lindenhurst"

As many of you may know The Wel's founding management company Grey Star has transitioned control over to Fairfield properties. The residents where blindsided as we were notified to the change as the new management took control. In this transitional period Fairfield staff has told residents that the building's name will now change to "Fairfield Metro at Lindenhurst". It is understandable that Fairfield would like brand their new asset, however at what cost? The residents of the Wel have made this building our home and have embraced the spirit of the Wel. The local significance of the the name dates back to 1861. Thomas Wellwood, and his wife Abby, had bought some acreage as early as 1861. After the arrival of the railroad, they purchased vast amounts of land. By 1870 they owned so much land that the railroad’s timetable listed as “Wellwood Station.” The Wel and its proximity to the LIRR helps bridge our past to our present. A change in its name would not only be a mistake in business but an insult to the very community you are joining.
