We now have over 2000 signatures!! A massive thanks to each of you for standing with Israel and requesting the Israeli Embassy remains open in Wellington. Many of you are appalled by the actions of Mr. McCully in rushing this resolution through the Security Council. McCully ignored warnings from Prime Minister Netanyahu, choosing instead to lead the charge against our traditional ally, Israel - the only democracy in the Middle East. New Zealand - who was once a staunch ally of Israel, who’s brave soldiers fought and died to free Israel – now lives in infamy as the primary sponsor of one of the most anti-Semitic resolutions ever ratified in by the UNSC. It’s a travesty that one misguided politician could be empowered to misrepresent New Zealand so destructively on the world stage. Not only does ‘2334’ potentially jeopardise a burgeoning bi-lateral trade relationship with Israel, but it directly opposes the clearly stated policies of the incoming Trump administration. Most of us can see the folly in this, but not Mr. McCully. Whatever the rationale behind his resolution, it is clear that McCully took a calculated risk that may cost New Zealand and the National party far more than they ever imagined. New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Bill English, has so far remained silent on the issue. While it is too early to say how bad the fallout might be, the domestic and international backlash over McCully’s infamous resolution 2334 will prove to be a less-than-desirable ‘swan song’ for a career already clouded in controversy. This petition and others will show Mr. Netanyahu that thousands of New Zealanders stand with Israel in opposition to Resolution 2334, and want the Israeli Embassy to remain with us.
