The Issue

The Bekanon Road interchange is more than just a junction on Highway 69; it's a lifeline for many in our community. For years, it has provided a crucial entry and exit point for local residents, seasonal cottagers, and businesses that form the backbone of our local economy. As someone who relies on this interchange daily, I understand firsthand the convenience and accessibility it offers to all of us.

As part of the future Highway 69/400 four‑laning project, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is reviewing design options for a 20 km section of the new alignment, from 1.7 km north of Highway 529 North to 3.9 km north of Highway 522. Within these long‑term plans, the MTO is considering changes to the future Bekanon Road interchange. This interchange is essential for local residents, seasonal cottagers, businesses, truckers, and travellers — including those who rely on our 24‑hour fuel and truck‑stop services, one of the few safe rest and service points on this northern stretch of Highway 69.

Relocating the interchange is not just an inconvenience; it's a potential threat to our way of life. The current location of the interchange is strategically perfect. Altering its location could lead to increased travel time, added fuel costs, and, most importantly, a decrease in safety for motorists who might need to navigate unfamiliar paths or longer routes to reach their destinations.

In addition to the daily needs of local communities, the interchange's current positioning supports emergency services that require quick and unimpeded access to the community. Delays or longer response times could put lives at risk, which is an unacceptable cost for progress.

We, as concerned community members, urge the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to reconsider any plans to relocate this vital interchange. Instead, we propose solutions like upgrading the current infrastructure while keeping its location intact, ensuring safety, efficiency, and preserving the community's needs.

Please join us in urging the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to maintain the Bekanon Road interchange at its current location, securing the well-being and prosperity of our community. Sign this petition to show your support and help us keep our community connected and thriving.
