The Issue

Rochester Hills is more than just a dot on the map; it's a thriving community where families thrive, and local businesses serve as the heartbeat of our small-town charm. However, the upcoming road construction project threatens to turn our bustling community into a ghost town, drastically impacting our livelihoods and our way of life. MDOT and the Road Commission for Oakland County officials plan to limit Rochester Road traffic to one direction for the duration of the project scheduled from spring to fall. While infrastructure improvements are crucial, this plan poses unnecessary hardships on residents and business owners alike. In the peak of our summer season, businesses rely heavily on customer accessibility for their survival. Restricted road access will not only deter customers who dread the inevitable traffic chaos but could result in significant revenue loss that many, especially small businesses, cannot endure. It is paramount to sustain the economic vitality of our neighborhood. Rochester Road is also an essential thoroughfare for emergency services, daily commutes, and school transportation. The proposed plan could delay emergency response times, posing a real threat to safety. School buses may find themselves in bottleneck traffic, causing stress for students and parents and putting education accessibility at risk. We acknowledge the necessity of the construction yet believe a balanced approach can minimize disruptions while achieving project goals. Alternatives such as staged construction, temporarily expanding adjacent roads, or a phased traffic management system that maintains two-way traffic flow could be employed to keep our community moving. These alternatives would mitigate negative impacts while still allowing the necessary upgrades to proceed. Our community's welfare should not be jeopardized for the sake of convenience or cost savings of one-direction construction. By signing this petition, you're taking a stand to protect our local businesses, support safety measures, and maintain the essence of Rochester Hills. Please join us, not only in opposing the current traffic plan but also in advocating for more thoughtful solutions that protect our community's integrity. Let’s keep Rochester Road open in both directions—together, we can make our voices heard.
