KEEP PORTERSWELL PLAYING FIELDS (New Fields) FREE AND FULLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL!
The Issue
Porterswell Playing Fields (New Fields) are Uddingston's last free and fully accessible recreational green space . The fields are under threat from a proposed Community Asset Transfer to a private sports club.
This area, which is widely used by individuals and groups in our community in many different ways, faces the real possibility of being handed over to a private group that plan to take ownership, astro turf and fence off the area, build a clubhouse and install floodlights, ultimately restricting access to this beautiful area within our community.
The proposed changes with their plastic pitches, threaten to drastically alter the natural environment of the immediate area and would have a long lasting effect on the vast array of wildlife, plants and river life in the surrounding Clyde Walkway area.
Unlike the many private gated sports facilities already available in Uddingston, public green spaces like this one are increasingly rare and should continue to be free to access, by all in our community.
This space is vital to our communities' physical health and mental well being, that's why we urge local authorities and decision-makers to refuse this proposal and prioritise the protection of Uddingston's last free public recreational green space.
Community Asset Transfers should protect community spaces not give one private group power to dictate how and when the space can be used (if at all) by the wider community.
This space is ours, so if you are a dog walker, nursery group, couch to 5kr, frisbee thrower, fitness group, bird watcher, picnicker, kids having some unstructured play, golfer, forager, deer spotter, rounder player, tree climber, nature lover, carry outer, sledger, star gazer, gardenless flat dweller, rocket launcher, casual footballer or their granny, please sign this petition and let's send a clear message that this public land is not up for grabs now or in the future.
No amount of upgrading would be better than what we have now, free and full access and this should continue for generations to come.
Thank you.
