Once again thank you to all the Teachers and Staff on this Teacher Appreciation Week.
Let's chat about the Board Meeting that just passed. We drove in a Caravan honking our horns and arrived at the Admin Building and got the attention of just about anyone and everyone, PCMS definitely got noticed!
The meeting started at 6pm and over 30 speakers were in attendance. This time there was a slight shift in the comments, we all knew the Trustees were going to have an open discussion on the Proposals and having seen and heard all our voices was not quite the approach we wanted to make. The Trustees after all are Humans and a part of our Community and we wanted them to know that they are supported as many Trustees have shared their experiences with PCMS and their care for everyone there.
Once the Public Comment portion was over the Trustees had their open discussion that went on until Midnight, and yes; PCMS was in attendance until midnight including our Leader Ms. Brown (hope someone got her some strong coffee Friday). Trustees Mayer, Lorigo-Johst and Torres voiced strong opinions that they were against the closure of Park Crest, Trustee Mitchell appears to be a supporter as well. One positive win that we gained is that no one could wholeheartedly make any decision on Park Crest because the room was so divided and the other Trustees argued that they needed more Data which we all agree was not presented to its wholeness.
As most of you saw on the District's email that was sent out, PCMS will not be voted on at the 5/14 Board Meeting, what has changed is the acknowledgement that A middle school may be necessary for closure but the one on the current Proposal (PCMS) was not the right choice, with additional data to be presented through December; the Board will review and make a decision by January. This is a small victory in a sense as all our current efforts have not gone unseen and we created such an opposition that an immediate vote could not be made.
The email was very clear, PCMS is not out of the woods yet and we should not slack on our efforts one bit, in fact we will now need to shift our focus. Westview was the other middle school proposed to be closed, this was removed from being voted on as enrollment is expected to climb due to the surrounding AISD schools potentially closing. PCMS does not have any AISD schools surrounding it that could be closing so how do we gain students like Westview will? Recruitment!
The PFISD website shows there are currently 766 students enrolled at PCMS, 815 students at Pflugerville Middle School, 979 at Kelly Lane, and 853 students at Bohls. https://www.pfisd.net/our-schools/middle-schools
In the District; PCMS is not the lowest in Enrollment but within our immediate surrounding schools that our Students could move to if Prop 7 passes we rank lowest.
I'd like to propose some recruitment efforts over the next few months and enlist all our current 1257 Petition Signers to help spread the word even more about our School. We have been presented Proposal 7 due to various reasons but one of them being a low student-count, let's change that, lets stop Charter Schools from taking our students away, let's get more families that are moving to Pflugerville into PCMS, lets get more transfers from other school districts.
We gained a small win, let's continue to fight to keep PCMS off the radar permanently.
