The issue

To: State and National Government Officials,

We, the undersigned, are calling for urgent action to address the critical issue of educator-to-child ratios in early childhood education settings. Recent reports of abuse and neglect in childcare centres have raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of our children. It is imperative that we establish stricter regulations to ensure that our youngest and most vulnerable citizens receive the care and attention they deserve.

Current Situation:
The current educator-to-child ratios in many states and territories are insufficient to provide adequate supervision and support for children in early childhood education settings. Research shows that lower ratios lead to better outcomes for children, including enhanced emotional development, improved learning, and a safer environment. Unfortunately, the existing ratios often leave educators overwhelmed and unable to provide the individualized attention each child needs.

Why This Matters:

 1. Safety and Security: Increased educator-to-child ratios will help ensure that children are supervised effectively, reducing the risk of neglect and abuse.

 2. Quality of Care: Smaller groups allow educators to build stronger relationships with children, fostering a nurturing environment that supports social and emotional development.

 3. Professional Support: Improved ratios will enable educators to focus on providing high-quality educational experiences rather than managing large groups, leading to better outcomes for children.

Our Demands:
We urge state and national governments to:

 • Review and revise the current educator-to-child ratio regulations to align with best practices and research findings.

 • Implement a phased approach to gradually reduce ratios, ensuring that all early childhood education centres can meet the new standards.

 • Provide additional resources and support for educators to facilitate this transition, including training and funding for hiring more qualified staff.

We believe that every child deserves a safe and supportive learning environment. By taking action to improve educator-to-child ratios, we can protect our children and ensure they receive the best possible start in life.
