THE SPORTSMAN HYDE NEWSFLASH 📰🗞️
This is the news we were all hoping for!
Just days ago, it looked like Hyde was about to lose one of its most cherished places — The Sportsman. More than just a pub, it has been a second home for so many people. A place of warmth, conversation, laughter, comfort, and connection. For many especially our elderly residents, it has been a lifeline.
When owner Geoff, after many years of trying, made the heartbreaking decision to sell to developers, it felt like the end of an era. Another piece of Hyde’s history at risk of being erased. Another beautiful, character-filled building facing the prospect of becoming just another block of flats.
But Hyde refused to let that happen.
The community came together in a way that was truly moving. A petition was launched, voices were raised, stories were shared, and the overwhelming message was clear: The Sportsman matters. Its tiled floors, ornate carvings, roaring open fires, these are not just features of a building, but the backdrop to decades of memories and friendships.
And then, at the very last moment, hope arrived.
Moved by the passion of the community and the beauty of this historic pub, local company Monopoly Properties stepped in at the 12th hour and saved The Sportsman. Thanks to Monopoly Properties and the incredible efforts of the community, the pub has been rescued from development and will continue as a going concern.
💛 We are incredibly proud to announce that The Sportsman will reopen this Friday at 12pm. Join us for one hell of an opening party!
The doors will open again. The fires will burn. Laughter will return to the rooms, and the heart of this community will beat strong once more.
Even better, the same familiar staff will be there to welcome you back, this community treasure is once again firmly in local hands, for many more decades of trade at the heart of Hyde.
This is what happens when people stand together. This is what community looks like 🤝
Thank you Hyde. Together we saved a community hub, and a valuable historical and cultural asset almost 200 years old!
