Keep Ontario Drinking Water Tests Free and Reliable

The Issue

A recent Auditor General’s report recommends several cost cutting measures that will significantly reduce access to reliable well water testing. All Ontarians deserve access to clean drinking water. Reducing the accessibility and reliability of well water testing poses a serious public health risks. Let’s not forget the illness and deaths contaminated water supply caused in the town of Walkerton, due in large part to provincial funding cuts. We must ensure that Ontarians, regardless of where they live, have equitable access to safe drinking water. As such, we are calling for the province of Ontario make the following amendments to recommendations put forward by the Auditor General:

  1. Include assurances that centralizing water testing facilities does not result in unreasonable delays or compromised samples due to the travel method, travel time or temperature fluctuations; and,
  2. That zero cost is associated with drinking water testing.

This petition is a part of a collaborative effort put forward by the Central Lakes Association of REALTORS®, the REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington and The Simcoe & District Real Estate Board.
