Keep Oakland Kids in School, Parents Say NO to an OEA Strike

The Issue

The Oakland Education Association (OEA) has called a strike vote for Monday, April 17th. As Oakland district families, we are enraged by this action. Our kids’ education is too important to be used as a pawn by adults who are using bad-faith tactics in (what are supposed to be) good-faith negotiations. We fully support teachers being paid well, and the current OUSD offer amounts to a significant pay increase for teachers, in some cases a 20% increase!

Sign on to our petition to join in a public sentiment that does NOT support teacher strikes that disrupt any of our students' learning, especially our students who are struggling the most in our schools right now. Signing this petition is also important to urge OUSD to take the legal action necessary to stop this. This website created by OEA teachers includes a plan to have an open-ended strike this Fall.

Right now, OEA members have engaged hundreds of Hills families for support. They have had presentations included in their PTA newsletters (Montclair) and personal text messages from their teachers asking for home visits next week. Meanwhile, thousands of flatlands families will be blindsided with a text message from the district communicating to them that they will not be able to bring their kids to school the next day.

The way we see it: Hills parents are being asked to support OEA putting their foot on the neck of flatland families, with no commitment for better reading or math outcomes for our kids. This is the way it’s always been — and we must come together as a community to say it’s not OK!

We are pushing hard on our Oakland community, from the hills to the flatlands, to stand up for zero disruption of our students’ learning. All of our students are recovering right now, and only 3 out of 10 can read or do math on grade level. Put our students first!
