Petition: Decision on Nursing Uniform in Pakistan

Nursing uniform – either retain the current uniform or adopt a new color scheme through proper consultation  

 

*Background*  
In January 2024, Pakistan updated the nursing uniform from the traditional all-white dress to navy blue scrubs with a white coat. This change was introduced to align with healthcare standards used in many countries, improve infection control, and strengthen the professional identity of nurses.We understand that the current navy blue uniform can cause confusion, as the same color is also worn by security guards, and the white coat is associated with doctors. However, reverting back to the all-white uniform is not the solution.

 

*Why This Matters*  

1. *Professional Standards*:

A consistent, professional uniform helps clearly identify nursing staff in clinical settings and aligns with practice in many healthcare systems worldwide.  
2. *Hygiene and Practicality*:

The current design supports better infection control and is practical for daily hospital work. On the other hand white gets stained very easily. It's very high maintenance and you have to be very cautious while working in white uniform. 

3. *Morale and Recognition*:

The update was seen by many nurses as recognition of their role as skilled healthcare professionals, not homestaff.

•   "Are we still in the 80s? It’s 2026. Nurses don’t need a symbolic color to look like nurses.

. *Public Perception*:

A professional uniform improves public trust and reflects the clinical, skilled nature of nursing work.

 

*Request*  We, the undersigned, urge the Ministry of Health and provincial authorities to:  

1.     Either retain the current uniform, if necessary, adopt a new color scheme only after consultation with nursing bodies and frontline nurses.  
2. Ensure any decision is based on clinical safety, hygiene, and professional standards, not on reverting to older practices without evidence.  
3. Communicate any changes clearly and give adequate time for implementation.

 

We ask for a decision that upholds the dignity, safety, and future of nursing in Pakistan.
