In August 2023, Mackenzie Shirilla was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years for the intentional murder of Dominic Russo (20) and Davion Flanagan (19). The court found that Shirilla purposefully accelerated her vehicle to 100 mph into a brick wall, acting as 'hell on wheels' to end the lives of her passengers. While the legal system has spoken, the conversation around this case is far from over. Although she is not scheduled for release until 2037, discussions about appeals, retrials, and her future have already begun. As time passes, there is a growing concern that true crime documentaries, podcasts, and social media narratives may increasingly portray the offender as a victim, while the lives lost and the pain experienced by their families are pushed to the background. Public interest and media sensationalism should never come at the expense of the facts or the memory of those we lost.

We, the undersigned, stand firm in our belief that accountability is non negotiable. The original sentence was a reflection of the gravity of the crime. Any attempt to reduce or overturn this sentence is an affront to justice and the families of the victims. Dominic and Davion were young men with futures, families, and friends who miss them every day. Their loss must not be overshadowed by the offender’s legal appeals or media portrayal. We oppose any efforts by media platforms to reframe this intentional act of murder. We demand that future discussions prioritize the victims' lives rather than humanizing the offender at their expense.  Regardless of how online narratives or public opinion may change over the coming years, the victims deserve to remain at the center of the conversation.
