The Issue

We, the undersigned, demand the City of San Jose cease any current and any potential future actions against Lighthouse Food, Rescue, Distribution, located at 17th and Julian.

Lighthouse opened their doors to the unhoused and marginally housed in 2022 offering a farmer’s like atmosphere where guests can pick out the items they want with dignity. All of the offerings are on the building side of the crosswalk and there are several volunteers staffing the line to ensure it moves along smoothly and that people can get through in the opposite direction.

Throughout COVID Lighthouse delivered meals to camps, they’ve found housing for DV victims and refugees from other countries. During these turbulent times where people are terrified of ICE, they will come out to get food from Lighthouse because they’re so trusted.

In 2025 Lighthouse started an Advocate Hotline, allowing for advocates like Hello Angels and Unhoused Response Group as well as large non-profits like PATH, HomeFirst and the City of San Jose and the VA to call ahead and order a box (Advocate Box) for a person or household. These boxes are a full produce box full of whatever is requested, some boxes need baby food, some are Vegetarian Boxes, some are Diabetic Boxes and there’s a brand new box for autistic children that includes a sensory toy.

Lighthouse is a reliable partner to 24 agencies, many are also partners with the city. Between the advent of the Advocate Boxes and the longer lines outside, output has increased 40% over last year which shows the popularity of Lighthouse and what a critical service provider it is to people, advocates and agencies throughout San Jose. If anything, the City of San Jose should be stepping in with rental assistance to allow Lighthouse to remain the beacon of dignity and community, in an area where the next food pantry is at least a half mile away.

We demand the City of San Jose assist Lighthouse in remaining at 17th and Julian. We demand the City of San Jose cease any current and any potential future actions against Lighthouse. We demand the City of San Jose support this local community asset.

Regards,

#IAMLIGHTHOUSE

Responded
“Lighthouse serves a critical role in our community, providing vital, tailored services to low-income and unhoused individuals. It’s also true that the site has a history of code violations at the current site, including ADA violations. Our office has been working closely with the Housing Department over the past few days to ensure they find a new location from which to offer services, one that is not only code compliant but better suited to the scale of their operation. [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
