Keep Immigration Agents Away From Florida Polling Places
The Issue
Florida voters are casting early ballots in the 2026 midterms, and some have found federal immigration agents at the polls. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) must commit, publicly and in writing, that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will stay away from every Florida polling place through Election Day.
In Leon County, two CBP vehicles sat for about 10 minutes outside the Northeast Branch Library, the county’s busiest early voting site. In Monroe County, the supervisor of elections opened an investigation after reports that masked federal agents made a stop at a Key Largo polling place. Both county election chiefs have reported the incidents to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Federal law already bars armed federal agents from operating at polling places except in rare emergencies. Earlier this year, the FBI assured Florida election officials there would be no immigration enforcement at the polls. Now agents have been reported at two sites anyway.
Every eligible voter, including citizens from mixed-status families, has the right to cast a ballot without fear. Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley put it plainly in a public statement: “Voters should never experience intimidation from anyone when they are voting.”
DHS must make that commitment now. The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice should fully investigate both incidents and share the findings with the public. The Florida Department of State should send clear guidance to all 67 counties that armed agents have no place at the polls.
Early voting is underway and Election Day is days away. Sign the petition to keep Florida’s polling places free from intimidation.
