Gold Coast Council Outsourcing Decision Raises Serious Questions Over Aquatic Centre Profits and Public Interest
Following the recent full council meeting of the City of Gold Coast, we are compelled to express our concerns regarding the decision to proceed with outsourcing the operations of the four public run aquatic centres.
During the council chambers session, it became evident how easily the case for outsourcing was sold to the nine councillors who voted in favour. The key points presented included:
The facilities are currently operating at a loss.
The Council will retain full control over the facilities.
The Council will maintain responsibility for maintenance and safety of the facilities.
The Council will have full control over pricing.
Staffing levels and quality of service will remain the same or even improve.
However, a critical question remains unanswered: If the Council, with full control over the facilities including, maintenance, safety, and pricing, cannot operate these facilities profitably, how can a private operator, who is driven by profit, succeed where the Council has failed?
We have solid information that the facilities have generated a profit of $6.6 million during the 2025-2026 financial year. When we initially raised this figure with the City, they did not refute the number. This raises significant questions about the true motivations behind this outsourcing decision and whether the public interest is being served.
We will be seeking clarity from the Council and the officers who presented and promoted this proposal, to understand the rationale and the financial implications fully.
Transparency and accountability are vital. Our members and the Gold Coast community deserve an answer to this question.
