TOMORROW, COUNCIL DECIDES THE FUTURE OF OUR POOLS

The clock is ticking.

Tomorrow, Gold Coast Councillors will decide whether the way our aquatic centres are run should be handed over to external operators.

If you care about our pools, now is the time to speak up.

Don’t wait until after the vote. Contact your Councillor today. Tag them below, send them an email or text them if their mobile number is publicly available.

Because our aquatic centres are about much more than running a business.

They are places where kids learn to swim, families exercise, schools train, clubs compete and communities come together. They provide affordable recreation, support local jobs and deliver services that many Gold Coast residents rely on.

That’s why the question shouldn’t simply be “Can someone else run these pools?”

The question should be:

“What delivers the best outcome for the Gold Coast community?”

Council can absolutely look at improving how the centres operate. There are opportunities to increase participation, expand programs, improve efficiency and generate more revenue.

But handing public facilities to a private operator is a much bigger decision.

Before making it, the community deserves confidence that Council has properly tested the alternatives and demonstrated that outsourcing will deliver the best financial, social and community outcome — not simply a different operating model.

These are community assets. Once control is handed over, bringing it back may not be so easy.

So before Councillors vote tomorrow, make sure they hear from you.
