The Issue

For years, I have struggled with my health due to insulin resistance. Despite my relentless efforts with diet and exercise, my body's resistance made weight loss and overall health improvement an uphill battle. This struggle has left me in a constant state of worry, knowing that my risks for diabetes, heart disease, and other severe health conditions continue to grow.

Discovering GLP-1 medications has been a turning point in my journey. These medications have not only helped me manage my weight but also improved my health outcomes drastically. The prospect of losing access to these life-changing medications is terrifying, especially for those of us who depend on Medicaid here in North Carolina.

The coverage of GLP-1 medications under Medicaid is crucial for individuals who need it the most—people like me, who have been fighting against the odds due to health conditions beyond our control. The absence of this coverage would not only be a setback in our health journey but also amplifies health disparities.

Currently, GLP-1 medications are not longer  going to be covered under medicaid in North Carolina as of October 1st, 2025. It's a decision that would leave many without the necessary support to manage their health effectively. Statistics show that access to these medications significantly improves outcomes for individuals suffering from insulin resistance and related conditions, decreasing rates of diabetes and associated complications.

By maintaining Medicaid coverage for GLP-1 medications, we take a step towards a healthier community, where everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthier, fuller life irrespective of their socioeconomic status.

I urge policymakers in North Carolina to consider the profound impact these medications have on individuals and the broader community. Removing this critical support would be detrimental to many who rely on Medicaid for their healthcare needs.
