Keep Giant Food from moving into Shoppers in New Carrollton, MD if They Decide To

Keep Giant Food from moving into Shoppers in New Carrollton, MD if They Decide To

The Issue

Growing up, my family and I always cherished our visits to the Giant in Glenridge Shopping Center on Annapolis Road. It was more than just a grocery store; it was a community staple, a place filled with memories that have spanned over 70 years. I'd hate to see another cherished local spot, Shoppers Food Warehouse in New Carrollton, MD, meet the same fate as the Giant I once knew, replaced by another Giant Food location.

In the last few years, numerous Shoppers locations in our area have been shut down and converted into Giant Food stores. We've seen this transition happen in areas like Crofton, Olney, Falls Church, Herndon, West Alexandria, Manassas, and several neighborhoods in Baltimore. Indeed, the rise of Giant Food is undeniable, but it's at the cost of reducing our grocery options and erasing the unique character that different grocery stores bring to our communities.

For decades, Shoppers Food Warehouse has served New Carrollton with dedication, providing diverse products and employment for our residents. Closing it will affect not just its workers but also the New Carrollton residents who rely on its variety and convenient location. It's not just about replacing one grocery store with another—it's about maintaining the diversity and choice that our community deserves.

We believe that local businesses should reflect the needs and choices of the communities they serve. One monolithic grocery chain dominating an area can lead to higher prices and fewer choices for consumers. Our community needs options, not monopolies. Preserving the variety that Shoppers Food Warehouse offers is crucial for maintaining a healthy community landscape in New Carrollton.

I urge those who care about the future of New Carrollton to take a stand and make your voices heard. Let’s send a clear message to decision-makers that we value diversity in our retail options and the unique character each brings to our community.

Please sign this petition to help preserve our community’s charm and oppose the conversion of our cherished Shoppers Food Warehouse into another Giant Food location. Together, we can make a difference.
