The Issue

My name is Mary Jean,  and I’m a 65-year-old grandmother, born and raised in Fitchburg, MA. I’ve spent my entire life in Fitchburg and Leominster — this is my home, my family’s home, and my community.

Every weekday I wake up at 4 a.m. so Fuzzy’s Café can open by 6 a.m. inside the MART station in Fitchburg. I serve hot breakfast and coffee to bus riders, train riders, and MART employees until 3 p.m. This café isn’t a chain. It’s me, in person, taking care of the people who keep this city moving.

Now MART is cancelling my lease early — even though I still have three years left — after I repeatedly asked them to keep the shared areas of the station clean and safe for the public. If I’m forced out, commuters lose their only real morning food option, and I lose my livelihood.

If Fuzzy’s Café is pushed out, the station loses its only fresh, affordable food option in the early morning. I lose my livelihood. And the riders who rely on us lose a place where they are treated like human beings.

I am asking MART to:

  • Reinstate the remaining three years of my lease, and
  • Commit to maintaining clean, safe shared areas for everyone who uses the station.

Please add your name to show that small, local businesses — and the people who depend on them — matter in Fitchburg. Your signature tells MART that this café is not just a “tenant.” It is part of the community.
