My brother is buried at this cemetery, and many other people have loved ones buried there. It is our right to decorate the plots we purchased.
Starting January 1st 2022, the cemetery is implementing a new policy that restricts family and friends from decorating their loved one’s plot. They are limiting all decorations to fresh flowers only. These fresh flowers will only be allowed to be placed in the cups provided by the cemetery. This presents many problems:
A) Fresh flowers can be expensive, and not every family has the means to replace old flowers weekly.
B) Some families live far away from the cemetery and do not live close enough to place fresh flowers often enough to ensure that the plot is always decorated. Fake flowers last much longer.
C) Only allowing fresh flowers limits the ability to personalize and customize the decorations to the deceased loved one. All people are individuals, and only the family and friends of the deceased person would know which decorations would best suit the deceased person.
D) When someone passes away, hearts are broken. We feel as if there is hardly anything we can do for our loved one. However, decorating and keeping a plot “alive” with memories and meaningful decorations allows us to feel that we are still able to serve our deceased loved one. No one should be able to restrict us from that.
E) It seems they want to restrict decorations simply for convenience of maintaining the cemetery. That is HARDLY good customer service. We have paid a lot of money to have our loved one buried there and deserve to have the people who run the cemetery put in the time, dedication, and attention to detail needed to maintain the cemetery with the decorations of our choosing.
F) For Christmas and other major celebratory holidays, we should be able to add decorations that help us feel we are celebrating the holiday with our deceased loved one.
G) There isn’t good lighting at the cemetery, so many families have added solar lights to decorate and light the plots of their loved ones. If we are required to remove these lights come January 1st, it will be very dark in the cemetery at night. This presents safety issues as well as making is difficult to spend time at the plot in the evening hours.
Those of us who have people buried at this cemetery should request for this new policy to be abandoned. It does not serve people well.
We want to keep the current decoration policy. It is posted on the office door, and I have included a picture of it here. Photo of Current Policy
