Dear Supporters,
Thank you – we now have 770 signatures on our petition opposing the Council's SEP push for extra alcohol trading after midnight. The ‘pro-SEP’ petition is still only at 180 signatures. That means we are almost 600 in front, great work – but now is the critical time to extend that lead.
Unfortunately, we’ve dropped off the back page of the Echo this week with our petition QR code – but we’ll try again next week. In the meantime, our best chance is you: please keep spreading the word to friends, neighbours, colleagues, and anyone who cares about Byron’s safety and future. Let’s smash through 1000 signatures by the end of next week.
What’s most disappointing is that despite my detailed submissions, not a single formal response has come from either the Premier, the Roads Minister, the Minister for the 24-Hour Economy, the Minister for Women, the Minister for the North Coast, or the Minister for Liquor Licensing. They need to hear from more of us – urgently. That more venues selling alcohol in Byron Bay is a really bad idea for many reasons.
👉 Action you can personally take now:
- Go to the NSW Government ‘Your Say’ weblink below for the Premier and relevant Ministers.
- Cut and paste the petition text directly into the form – or use your own words.
- Tell them why extending late-night drinking in Byron is a bad idea and why our community deserves better. Byron is simply not cut and paste Sydney for a SEP.

This is the pointy end of the decision period. Byron Shire Council is expected to vote on the SEP trial at their late November meeting. We will keep the petition open until mid-November, but time is running out to influence this decision.
Together we can do this – let’s keep Byron vibrant and safe, not more dangerous after midnight. Share the petition link, reach out to your networks, and make sure the Premier and Ministers know where our community stands. Outside of a SEP, we need real State funding now to fix the current issues and show that we can manage our issues after 12am and before 12am for that matter.
Thank you again for standing strong – we are being heard, and with your help, we’ll be impossible to ignore.
Short Version (for Social Media / Quick Share) get it out to FB Community Pages, Instagram and other social media pages. Every share will help grow our signatures.
🚨 Petition Update: 770 have signed against the Byron SEP trial, with the ‘pro’ petition only at 180 – we’re almost 600 ahead! But we need to push harder. Byron Council plans to vote on a trial SEP late November, so time is running out. Please share the petition, reach out to friends and neighbours, and let’s smash 1000 signatures by the end of next week. Premier and Ministers still haven’t replied – they need to hear from ALL of us now via their ‘Your Say’ webpages. No more alcohol after 12am in Byron – keep our town vibrant and safe!
Cheers and enjoy your long weekend, stay safe,
Anthony Stante
