Keep Bus 70 running in Calgary

Le problème

I am writing this petition because the impending shutdown of Bus 70 at the end of December deeply concerns many riders in our communities. The city’s decision, based on claims of low ridership, overlooks the fact that for those of us who rely on this service daily, Bus 70 is far more than a statistic—it is a crucial lifeline that connects two communities to the downtown core and allows us to commute without the need for a car.

If Bus 70 is discontinued, many residents will face significant hardships. The proposed alternative services simply do not offer the same convenience or coverage and would increase commute time to two hours each way—from community to downtown and back. For individuals without a vehicle, or those striving to reduce their carbon footprint by using public transit, this bus is essential.

Bus 70 plays a critical role in connecting neighborhoods and supporting students, seniors, and working professionals in accessing schools, workplaces, and vital services. Eliminating this route will disrupt daily routines and likely increase traffic congestion as more people resort to driving. This shift would also have a negative environmental impact, directly contradicting our city’s sustainability goals.

We fully recognize that Calgary’s population has grown significantly in recent years, which naturally places added pressure on infrastructure and the city’s budget. However, growth should be met with thoughtful planning that expands services to meet increasing demand, rather than replacing one essential community service with another.

Public transportation should not be judged solely by ridership numbers. It must also promote inclusivity and accessibility for all citizens. In some communities, fewer riders does not mean lesser need—it reflects the importance of mobility equity.

We urge the city council and transportation authorities to reconsider this decision and explore community-focused solutions. These could include conducting thorough consultations to better understand ridership needs and adjusting schedules to improve efficiency and attract more users.

Please sign this petition to help keep Bus 70 running and preserve an essential public service for Calgary residents. Together, we can work toward a transportation system that meets the needs of all citizens.
