The Issue

In Bowen, Illinois, there's a concern that's been weighing heavily on my mind and the minds of many parents in our community. Our young 5th and 6th graders are at risk of being moved from the elementary school to the junior high. This decision not only causes overwhelming stress for these young children but also exposes them to an environment where bullying is a significant issue.

Our elementary school has been a nurturing, supportive, and safe environment for these students. At this tender age, they thrive best when surrounded by familiar faces and supportive teachers who understand their unique developmental needs. Transitioning them to the junior high at this crucial stage makes them vulnerable to bullying, which is all too prevalent at these higher levels. We've seen too many times the impact bullying can have on the mental health and academic performance of young students.

The education authorities argue that this move is beneficial for administrative purposes, but we must ask, at what cost? Is administrative convenience worth sacrificing the safety and well-being of our children? The statistics on bullying at the junior high level reveal alarming rates of incidents that cause lasting emotional scars and hinder learning and development.

By keeping our 5th and 6th graders at the elementary school, we protect them from these risks. We allow them to continue growing academically and socially in a setting that respects their pace. We must stand together as a community to ensure our children have the opportunity to learn and grow in the safest environment possible.

Join me in urging the Southeastern educational authorities to reconsider this move. Let's ensure that our children remain in a nurturing environment where they are not only learners but also cherished young individuals free to flourish. Your support is critical.

Sign this petition to keep our Bowen 5th and 6th graders in their elementary school, where they belong.
