Keep Barrington's School Zones and Roads Safe

Keep Barrington's School Zones and Roads Safe
The Issue
Several months ago, a crossing guard at one of Barrington's elementary schools expressed concern to a Council member over the increase of speeding cars on Sowams Rd, through the school zone, even during the periods around the start and end of schools days.
Over multiple Council meeting the Town explored and deliberated upon a range of potential solutions. The Chief of Police was tasked with evaluating the feasibility and success of some of these options, including speed cameras. A report conducted showed a dangerously high percentage of cars speeding through school zones during school hours. More than half the cars exceeded the speed by 11mph or faster.
Speed cameras can be installed in school zones at no cost to the Town and have been proven successful in reducing speeds.
The Town Council is still evaluating options. The purpose of this petition is to express support for speed cameras, if that is what they decide. Alternative methods could include flashing lights and speed displays, or speed bumps/tables, and/or increased speed traps (officers directly monitoring roads and ticketing speeders). Each of these alternatives has, to this point, been determined to be infeasible or ineffective as compared to the success anticipated from cameras at reducing speeds.
