Keep Band and Orchestra Classes Within School Hours in Finneytown Elementary School

Keep Band and Orchestra Classes Within School Hours in Finneytown Elementary School
The Issue
As a parent of three children in Finneytown, OH, I have personally witnessed the transformative power of music education. My older children's lives were significantly enriched through their participation in the band program in Finneytown Schools. Now, my youngest child is eager to follow in their footsteps.
However, recent proposals to move band and orchestra classes before regular school hours threaten this opportunity for her and many other students. These changes could make it difficult for working parents to facilitate their children's participation due to transportation issues or conflicting schedules. While the school has said transportation will be provided, it has not yet announced what this will look like. In addition, some students have responsibilities in the home before school that would also preclude their participation.
Music education is not just an extracurricular activity; it is an integral part of a well-rounded education. Studies show that students who participate in music programs perform better academically (National Association for Music Education). They also develop critical life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and creativity.
Moreover, according to the National Endowment for the Arts report on arts education outcomes, students involved in school-based music programs are more likely to graduate high school and attend college than those who do not participate (National Endowment for the Arts).
We urge you not to marginalize these important programs by moving them outside regular school hours. Our children deserve access to comprehensive arts education within their daily schedule without additional burdens placed on them or their families. One of the core values of Finneytown Schools is Diversity and Equity. These proposed changes will make access to Elementary band and orchestra less equitable, which will have an impact on the music program for years to come.
Please support our call by signing this petition today! Let us ensure that every student at Finneytown Elementary School has equal access to enriching musical experiences during regular school hours.
