Growing up as a student at Solanco High School, I've seen firsthand the adverse effects of vaping among my peers. What once seemed like a minor issue has spiraled into a significant problem, with an increasing number of students feeling pressured into vaping within school premises. Our school's recent initiative to install cameras and vape detectors in some of the bathrooms is proving to be a pivotal step in addressing this concern.

The modernized bathrooms have not only deterred those who previously vaped without fear of consequence, but have also provided a sense of safety for students who avoid these areas due to the rampant vaping culture. We must extend these safety features to all bathrooms at Solanco High School to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the entire student body.

Consider the statistics: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 20% of high school students use e-cigarettes. The potential impact on young people’s health and academic performance is alarming, with reports indicating that vaping can lead to nicotine addiction and other serious health issues.

Some concerns have been raised about students being unable to reach a call button during a medical emergency and about privacy in the bathrooms. However, a student who suddenly passes out or becomes medically incapacitated may be unable to reach a call button regardless of where it is located. In fact, the older bathrooms did not have call buttons at all, making proactive safety measures even more important. As someone who has a disorder that can cause me to pass out, I understand firsthand how quickly a medical situation can happen and how important it is for others to be able to recognize when a student needs help. Additionally, concerns about privacy should be considered alongside the purpose and placement of these systems. Monitoring common areas such as entrances and hand-washing areas is not the same as monitoring private areas such as bathroom stalls. Students should be able to expect appropriate privacy while using the restroom, while the school should also be able to maintain a safe environment and monitor what is happening in shared spaces. Increased monitoring can help discourage vaping, bullying, and other inappropriate activity while also making bathrooms less of a social gathering place and more of what they are intended to be: a safe place for students to use the restroom. These measures should be viewed as a proactive safety step designed to protect all students, not simply as a punishment for those who vape.

Expanding this initiative is a proactive step towards reducing these risks. Furthermore, the overhead costs of installing detectors and cameras across all bathrooms is justifiable when weighed against the long-term health benefits. Other schools have successfully implemented similar measures, and studies show a significant decrease in on-campus vaping incidents.

However, it's not just about surveillance. This change must be paired with educational programs that address the risks associated with vaping. Collaborating with local health professionals to provide workshops could further enhance awareness, offering a comprehensive approach to prevention.

I urge the school administration not only to maintain the current installations but to expand them to every bathroom. This is an investment in the health and safety of students, ensuring that our school prioritizes an environment conducive to learning and wellbeing.
