Keep 3 Day Visits At Level 4 Prisons

The Issue

I am making this petition to express my strong opposition to the Governor's Budget Summary (May Revision), particularly regarding the proposed Level IV Visiting Reduction. This reduction entails cutting $4.1 million ongoing funding by decreasing in-person visiting days from three to two at Level IV institutions. The negative repercussions of this proposal go far beyond just the individuals incarcerated; they also affect their families. Family members often play a crucial role as a source of support during incarceration, providing emotional strength, practical help, and a sense of belonging. By severing, restricting, or further limiting these vital connections through reduced visiting days, not only are familial relationships strained, but the potential for a successful reintegration into society upon release is also compromised. Such measures could lead to higher rates of recidivism and place additional strain on an already overburdened correctional system. It is imperative to consider the broader implications of these budget cuts and prioritize the well-being and successful reentry of incarcerated individuals and their families. For over a year now, we have been fortunate to have 3-day visits. These visits have been a consistent source of support for the inmates and their families without significantly impacting our budget. It is crucial that we maintain these visits as they play a vital role in the mental health and rehabilitation process. Cutting a day off would disrupt the routine and connection that is so important for these individuals. It's important to remember that not everyone can visit on weekends, so having the flexibility of a 3-day visit is invaluable. Let's continue to prioritize these visits and the positive impact they have on not only the incarcerated but the families as well. Please sign and share this petition to help us stop the ban of 3 day visits at our level 4 prisons! A Campaign at the capital is currently being put together. Until then please sign and share this petition.
