The Issue

Every year, Kinsale Community School organises a charity walk to support various charitable  causes and instill the importance of empathy in students and teachers alike.  As a student who has usually looks forward to these walks, I believed I was making a difference in our community by helping those in need. However, this year, I received the disappointing news that the funds raised will not support a  charity but will instead contribute to building a new facility within our school.

While improvements in school infrastructure are important, I believe that using what is normally a charity event to fund such efforts  is wrong especially as neither students nor their parents were consulted about these changes before hand.  Quite frankly, I think this action undermines the trust between students, parents, and the administration. Traditionally, the school charity walk has been about extending help beyond the school gates, donating to worthy causes such as Down Syndrome Ireland, The Irish  Cancer Society and Kinsale Your Support Services & Community Centre. Redirecting the funds inward diminishes the purpose and inspiration these charity walks once carried. Knowing that participating in school walks was helping to provide for those in need was what motivated many students, like me, to take part in the past.

Studies by reputable organizations, such as the UK Charity Commission,  emphasize the importance of transparency and honesty in charitable organizations. Schools like ours  are by no means an exception. When students and parents are aware of where their contributions are headed, they can make informed decisions and engage more meaningfully in such activities. I believe fostering this trust encourages a  culture of honesty and accountability, which is vital in an educational environment such as our school.

I propose that the school reconsider its decision and allocate the funds raised to a deserving and genuine charity, which could use all the help it can get . Moreover, I urge the school's administration to introduce clear guidelines ensuring that future school events adhere to standards.

It's time to uphold the integrity of our school and direct our efforts to genuinely charitable causes that are always in need of  support. Join me in urging our school to commit to its understanding and charitable values . Please sign this petition to ensure that our contributions make a real difference in the wider community.
