KCS no dress code

The Issue

They have added a dress code to knox county schools and it’s very sexist and outdated.

  1. male teachers dress code women and it’s really embarrassing and uncomfortable. My algebra teacher dress coded my friend for showing her stomach and wearing a skirt. no one was uncomfortable until a grown man pointed it out.
  2. girls are sent to the office to get new clothes because they are a distraction to boys. that’s saying that a boys education is more important than a girls because while a male is sitting there learning a girl is waiting in the office for new clothes.
  3. the dress code sexualizes young girls. saying “no bra straps showing” “shorts are too short” “shoulders are a distraction” girls have to deal with all of these things and if you are pointing it out then you are the problem.
  4. this is a public school with kids from all different backgrounds. there should be no rule of what kids should and shouldn’t wear because this is a public place.
  5. the cheerleading outfits provided by the school are also so short you can see under them. the school is allowed to make young girls wear short skirts but will call other girls out and embarrass them for just wearing them on their own.
  6. the rule no pj pants is ridiculous. the time that school starts already interrupts a teens natural sleep schedule and now we can’t wear pj pants to school. we should be able to be comfortable at a place that we spend more time at then our own house.
  7. the physical education dress code says no sandals, no strap shirts, and no short shorts. we have to take physical education to graduate school and we should be able to wear whatever shoes. (some people also can’t afford other shoes so the school should provide some) that’s not the biggest problem though. while girls are getting dress coded for wearing strapped shirts because they are burning up and sweating, guys are wearing strap shirts and no one says anything because no one sexualizes a man’s arms or legs. it’s just another way to sexualizes and control young women.
  8. the rule that a shirt should cover leggings and yoga pants is again sexualizing young girls. no one notices because it is a normal part of the body, until teachers point it out and call it inappropriate. the teachers are getting distracted not the children.
  9. the rule also says no extremely baggy or oversized pants. so we can’t wear leggings without a huge shirt but we also can’t wear baggy pants. our clothes can’t be too tight but they can’t be too big either.
  10.  the rule no piercings not on the ear needs to change. no one is being distracted by a piercing and if the parents allow the child to have one why is a public school allowed to tell them that they can’t have it.
  11. In conclusion the dress code is ridiculous and discriminatory. It is also offensive to some people but having no dress code offends no one. The dress code sexualizes young girls and in some circumstances some men. The dress code doesn’t have to be permanently removed, it should just be changed to a more reasonable and less strict version.
  12. Thank you everyone for supporting me and commenting! I hope with all your help we can make this happen and prove our point.
