In 2013, one week before my children were to start kindergarten at Buena Vista elementary in Walnut Creek, we received a phone call from the principal of Indian Valley elementary telling us that our children were being transferred to her school.  While this news was unsettling, we decided not to question the decision since our children had not developed an affinity for Buena Vista, and Indian Valley was a good school.  We sought assurances from Indian Valley's principal that our children would not be moved again and would be allowed to finish their elementary education at Indian Valley - we were assured that this would not be a problem.

Our time at Indian Valley has included some of the most enjoyable and fulfilling moments of parenthood, both for myself and for my wife. Our children are extremely shy, something that has always challenged them to make external friends, but the environment at Indian Valley has allowed them to build many strong and meaningful friendships. At Indian Valley, we have seen our two babies blossom into little boys who can read and write, attend play dates, participate in school events, and just be good human beings. Similarly, my wife has become very integrated into the Indian Valley parent/teacher community. She is our room parent, an auction committee member, a library volunteer, and in general, one of the people who contributes significantly to what makes the Indian Valley community great.

Recently we became aware that the Walnut Creek school board is planning to change the elementary school boundaries in our district.  With this boundary change will come mandatory transfers of students who do not fall within their assigned school's boundary.  Our children would be impacted by this boundary change and would be required to move back to Buena Vista.  The proposed boundary changes do not contemplate grandfathering students who have already been moved once by the school district, and ignore the commitments that were made to families like mine.

I can honestly say that the thought of changing schools at this point in my children’s development is almost inconceivable to me. My entire family has made a substantial commitment to Indian Valley and we would like nothing more than to remain within the community we have worked so hard to establish ourselves in.

There are many families in Walnut Creek who were moved by the school district and assured that they would not be moved again - please support this petition and allow our children to be grandfathered into their existing elementary schools.
