Immediate Services/Supports For Individuals With Disabilities At Age 18

Immediate Services/Supports For Individuals With Disabilities At Age 18
The Issue
My son Noah just turned 18 this past September. He has Autism, is non-verbal and extremely high needs. As of September 17, 2015, he lost all services/supports and funding that I have advocated for the past 16 years. Once individuals with disabilities turn 18, families must begin advocating again from ground zero for their adult child to obtain services/supports and funding with no smooth transition from child to adult sector of services. There are extremely long wait lists to obtain these services and parents have nowhere to turn. There are no out of home respite services. Parents are being forced into a corner to make a decision about their adult child with disabilities that they don't want to make, and that decision is to relinquish their parental rights in order for them to obtain services immediately. Why is the Ontario government putting families through this heartbreaking ordeal? Why is there no monies or services available immediately for families once these individuals turn 18? It may take several years for families to receive any financial help or services. Parents are stressed and overwhelmed. We are demanding that Premier Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals allocate monies and services for individuals with disabilities once they turn 18, with a smooth transition from child to adult sector of services. This flawed system MUST change.
