Choice in Care Providers for Children with Disabilities

The Issue

It is time that the State of Oregon stop their discrimination against parents of disabled children!

Please sign this petition to Governor Kate Brown, Oregon Health Authority, and the Office of Developmental Disability Services. Oregon disability families deserve to have the choice in who provides in-home care to their children and parents deserve the option to perform that work instead of hiring a stranger.

Families with disabled children will not sit idly by while frontline care workers disappear from hospitals and our homes, leaving our children without quality care, and our families without support.

In Oregon, unlike in other states, biological parents of minor children are one of the few people ineligible to be paid caregivers to their children. It’s time for this to change!  Families of disabled children need this to change!

Please sign this petition to Governor Brown and other state law makers. Oregon disability families deserve to have the choice in who provides in-home care to their children and parents deserve the option to perform that work instead of hiring a stranger.

A large and rapidly growing coalition of Oregon parents of minor children with disabilities is demanding to be able to access money already earmarked by the state for in-home caregiving.

After a huge public outcry, in January of 2021, Oregon parents were temporarily allowed to be paid caregivers of their disabled children.  This has stabilized families and has been a literal lifesaver!

This allowance is set to end when the federal state of emergency lifts.  We cannot go back to the time where families of disabled children are torn apart due to being overworked and financially strapped.

If parents choose to do the work (that the State has already agreed to pay for) they should be paid the same as any other Personal Support Worker or Direct Service Provider.

Please sign this petition to Governor Brown and other state law makers. Oregon disability families deserve to have the choice in who provides in-home care to their children and parents deserve the option to perform that work instead of hiring a stranger.
