My Reason for Starting This Movement

Gun violence is not something I only hear about on the news.

I have experienced it firsthand. I am a victim of gun violence because I lost my sister to it.

That loss changed my life and my family forever. I know the pain that comes with losing someone you love to violence, and I know our family is not the only family carrying that pain.

I am sharing my experience not to make this movement about my sister, but to help people understand why this cause is so personal to me.

My sister is one victim. But there are so many other victims, families and communities affected by gun violence, and every one of those lives matters.

I want this movement to give a voice to all victims and all families affected by violence.

I don’t want another family to experience the pain my family has experienced.

I believe we have to do more than say, “Stop the violence.” We have to come together, raise awareness, demand solutions, and hold our leaders accountable for making our communities safer.

I cannot change what happened to my sister.

But I can use what I experienced to stand up for others.

Her story is part of why I started this movement. But this movement is for all of us.

OUR FIRST STAND: PUT EYES ON OUR NEIGHBORHOODS

We are asking Kansas City leadership to work directly with residents to develop a stronger neighborhood safety plan.

We are asking the city to:

• Evaluate neighborhoods and intersections experiencing repeated violent crime.

• Strategically place public-safety cameras where they are appropriate and needed.

• Improve lighting in areas where poor visibility creates safety concerns.

• Include residents in identifying locations that need additional safety measures.

• Provide the community with a clear plan and timeline for proposed improvements.

• Provide regular updates to residents regarding progress and results.

• Maintain clear privacy protections and responsible policies for the use of camera footage.

We understand that cameras alone will not stop violence.

This movement is bigger than cameras.

This is about prevention, protection, accountability and giving our communities a voice.

OUR MESSAGE

We are not here just to complain. We are here to demand solutions.

We don’t just want promises.

We want a plan.
We want action.
We want accountability.
