Asbestos is the #1 cause of occupational death in Canada. The number of new mesothelioma (a type of lung cancer directly linked to asbestos) diagnoses have doubled per year compared to 20 years ago. Once diagnosed approximately only 20% of people will live to 5 years or more. 50% will die within 1.5 years. Asbestos has been banned in 50 countries to date but Canada continues to import the substance in piping, brake pads, raw & other forms. Most cases of mesothelioma take a long time to develop, thereby resulting in most victims having no idea they're terminally ill until the disease is in or close to its final stages. Studies done in the 1930's revealed that 20% of asbestos exposed workers had developed asbestosis, but these results were silenced for liability negligence & high profits. Knowing what we do, for as long as we have, how are we still allowing its use?
