Treat disabled veterans with respect on Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA)!
The Issue
Canada is about to change the Veterans Affairs Canada Earnings Loss Benefit (ELB) Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) to end the 2% cap!
2% is hardly a respectful amount for a veteran disabled in service to Canada! This point compares so badly it is UNCONSCIONABLE.
1. Old Age has no cap on inflation;
2. Guaranteed Income Supplement has no cap on inflation;
3. Canada Pension Plan has no cap on inflation;
4. The CF pension has no cap inflation;
5. The Pension Act pension, the predecessor to the Earnings Loss Benefit, has no cap on inflation!
So Canada decided, in 2006 when the New Veterans Charter was enacted, that the lives of our disabled veterans was so unimportant that they did not assign a BASIC tenet of our society, inflation protection for the vulnerable! COLA is designed to make sure that the retired & disabled are afforded extra help as they have a FIXED income. Without it, the veterans who became disabled in service to Canada are relegated to a spiral into POVERTY in times of high inflation.
The reason for this cap on inflation is easy to see. The Canadian Forces' Service Income Support Insurance Plan (SISIP) has the same 2% cap. This is the Long Term Disability insurance plan that soldiers self-insure themselves against calamity with. SISIP is Non-Public Property, a fancy term meaning that the taxpayer does not pay for it.
Yet the other Federal LTD plans have a cap of 3%! That might seem like a 1% difference but it is 50% as it is 1/2 = 50%! The very people who govern the SISIP plan gave themselves a 50% increase over the one's who protect them from enemies of the state!
This is ABSURD & deserves to be investigated. An immediate END of the 2% cap on SISIP is required & a retroactive change in the policy to the date it started. Nothing else is acceptable. From 1976-2012, the years of the Manuge class action, the 2% cap resulted in a loss of 100%!
How can this be justified in a liberal democracy?
Don't Canadians value their freedom?
Freedom isn't FREE! It is earned in SACRIFICE!
