What a year it has been!

Since the beginning of this petition, many individuals, restaurants, cafes, hotels and businesses have jumped on board and made significant changes. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has supported #byebyepailles and #byebyepaillesmtl or one of our amazing sister campaigns with the goal of reducing single-use plastics.

Around the country, individuals are working hard to create these changes with their daily choices as consumers, by expressing their concerns to businesses, and by speaking with and writing to leaders in their cities. Luckily for Montreal, we have reached a turning point. The work is certainly not over, but we do have some serious celebrating to do!

On Earth Day 2019, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante and city councillor Laurence Lavigne Lalonde announced that the city will be moving forward with a plan to reduce and ban single-use plastics to preserve and protect our precious environment. The ban, beginning spring 2020, will target plastic straws, utensils, bags, as well as styrofoam cups and take-out containers. A monumental victory for our campaign, for all Canadians, and for the world!

This is an ambitious endeavour, but I am confident it is one that Montrealers and Canadians will stand behind and accomplish successfully. The future is bright when we work together! Onward!
