To the Honourable President and Members of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. This petition of certain citizens of New South Wales states that:

  • Boral have lodged an application with the NSW Department of Planning to expand their Dunmore sand mining operation near Kiama on the NSW South Coast.
  • The two new proposed sand mining pits would be dug within and in close proximity to environmentally sensitive areas along the Minnamurra River.

If allowed to proceed the project would:

  • Result in clearing of a number of mature Bangalay Trees EEC and Littoral Rainforest trees within the mine site. A high likelihood of impact on Littoral Rainforest EEC and coastal salt-marsh EEC adjacent to the mine site.
  • Risk impacts on the Minnamurra River estuary, a popular fishing , local recreation and tourism location.
  • Negatively impact on habitat of marine and birdlife including other iconic endangered species such as the Powerful Owl

Your petitioners request the NSW Government oppose the Boral proposal and any new sand mining that risks the environmental, recreation and tourism values of the region.
