Bring term limits to the United States Congress by 2024!
The Issue
For too long, politicians in D.C. have had the unfortunate luxury of making a career of climbing the rungs of the political ladder, sucking the proverbial teat of corporate interest groups, and wasting taxpayer dollars of expending Americans civil and economic liberties.
Politicians who consistently brag about the level of experience they have, that therefore justifies the election to a higher office, just goes to show that they value their role in the political sector more than they do in the productive private sector.
It was Benjamin Franklin who summed up the best case for term limits more than two centuries ago: “In free governments, the rulers are the servants, and the people their superiors . . . . For the former to return among the latter does not degrade, but promote them.”
The purpose of public office is to sacrifice your time in the real world and to provide what you can to the public for a limited amount of time as an act of nobility and selflessness. But now, politicians see government as an opportunity of a lifetime, rather than a sacrifice. Do we need a reminder that long-term pols with lots of “experience” in Washington have blessed Americans with trillions in debt and a federal government that sucks more and more from our wallets year after year after year?
By 2024, I urge that Congress passes a bipartisan bill to instate term limits. Specifically a cap of 12 years for both chambers. That means, 2 terms in the Senate, and 6 terms in the House of Representatives, consecutive or otherwise.
