Justice for UPSC students of Rajinder Nagar
The Issue
I am a UPSC student in Rajinder nagar, Delhi and I write this, bearing deep sorrow and dismay in the wake of a preventable tragedy. My fellow students, pursuing their dreams of civil service, lost their lives recently in an underground library of Rau’s IAS study circle institution at Rajendra Nagar due to gross negligence. Open wiring, insufficient sewage management, and poor drainage systems - all speak eloquently of the appalling state of safety measures in several such institutions in our capital city. Everyone is aware of the water logging issue of that area since it happens every time every year. All the available libraries are in the basement with a single narrow entrance point.Due to the water logging there was power cut which led to non-functioning of biometric door of the library leaving the students stuck in the basement, the pressure of the water broke the glass door and the water gushed inside with force trapping the students in the basement. The water filled so quickly till the roof of the library leading to the demise of 3 students according to official records. This situation could’ve been avoided if the institution followed safety norms or if the government did not permit such unsafe premises. We want justice for our fellow students.
Numerous students across the country flock to these institutes, placing not just their dreams but their lives in the hands of those in charge. Their trust and hope should never be repaid with negligence leading to fatal incidents. Educational institutions, above all, should be safe havens for learners.
We implore the relevant authorities to enforce strict and immediate compliance with safety norms amongst all educational institutions. We request that those institutions found guilty of neglecting basic safety measures to be immediately closed and subjected to a rigorous inquiry and we request for all the open wiring to be closed so it is safe for everyone. The heartbreaking incident at Rajendra Nagar is a potent reminder of the deadly costs of institutional negligence.
Let us ensure it does not happen again. Every student deserves an educational journey free of life-threatening risks. Your signature can help pressurize the authorities- city officials, education board directors, and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, to take swift and decisive action on this matter. Please lend your support to this cause; no student's life should be trifled with due to negligence. Sign this petition and bring forth the justice and changes needed. #Wewantjustice
