Justice for Tri-Marea Charles: Release the Body Camera Footage Now

The Issue

We demand the immediate release of all body camera footage related to the police-involved shooting of Tri-Marea Charles on February 7, 2025, in Titusville, Florida under Chief John Lau of the Titusville Police Department's supervision. The public deserves full transparency and the family of Tri-Marea Charles deserves answers. Please sign in support of the list of demands below.

On the night of February 7, 2025, Tri-Marea Charles, a 25-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in the back by officers of the Titusville Police Department. Since that day, there has been no release of the body-worn camera footage from any of the officers involved. Instead, members of the community have been threatened, harassed and silenced through various control tactics initiated by members of Titusville law enforcement for speaking on Tri-Marea Charles as well as the injustices they've faced while residing in the community.

The City of Titusville and the Titusville Police Department have offered limited as well as conflicting information surrounding this tragedy. On May 13th, 2025 City Council members requested Titusville Chief of Police John Lau to show his mother, Samantha Charles, the body cam video from that night requiring Charles's mother to sign a confidentiality, NDA to view the footage. John Lau has denied releasing the footage ignoring a direct request from government adding to the trauma of a grieving mother and community resulting in Samantha Charles being removed from a regular city Council meeting on May 27th, 2025 for speaking about her son.

We are calling on Chief John Lau, Mayor Andrew Connors, and State Attorney William Scheiner to take immediate action by publicly releasing all unedited, unredacted body camera footage from the shooting. Full transparency is not just a gesture of goodwill—it is a legal and moral obligation, especially in a case where a life was lost at the hands of law enforcement. Officer Xzevies Baez, the alleged officer responsible for the murder of Tri-Marea Charles, has an extensive history of misconduct, use of excessive force, Police brutality with a deadly weapon, and fabrication of evidence since starting and transferring from the Cocoa Police Department. Officer Xzevies Baez is the alleged officer responsible for the murder of Tri-Marea Charles on February 7th, 2025.

Demands

  • Immediate release of all body camera footage related to the police-involved shooting of Tri-Marea Charles on February 7, 2025, in Titusville, Florida
  • Prosecution of all officers involved in Tri-Marea Charles’s death
  • Firing of Chief Lau, whom retired in 2017 but is still acting Chief of Titusville Police Department
  • Hiring of a new Chief of Police with candidates outside of Brevard County and or Titusville Florida
  • Removal of City Mayor Andrew Connors
  • Creation of a Community Garden to honor Tri-Marea Charles, the lives lost to police brutality by Titusville Police Department, and the families of the unsolved murders in the City of Titusville forming a sacred space for healing as well as a hub for personal development and growth

The family of Tri-Marea Charles and the Titusville community as a whole, are still grieving, seeking truth, and demanding justice. In a state governed by Florida’s Sunshine Law, the public has the right to access public records, including police bodycam footage. Withholding this footage undermines community trust and perpetuates a pattern of silence around police violence in Brevard County.

We demand the immediate release of all body camera footage from officers present on February 7, 2025. This is not just about one case. It is about the right of every citizen to accountability, visibility, and the truth. No family should have to beg for footage to learn what happened to their loved one. No city should protect profit over justice. Silence is Violence.

We stand in solidarity with the family of Tri-Marea Charles. His life mattered. His story matters. And the truth must be told.
