The reversal of funding for the Central Florida Zoo is a significant moment; it shows that public pressure works; it shows that lawmakers are aware of the outrage; and it shows that the Sloth World disaster cannot be quietly swept aside. The zoo will now receive seven hundred fifty thousand dollars instead of the proposed cut; and that only happened because people refused to look away. Representative Rita Harris sent us a thoughtful message acknowledging the cruelty; acknowledging the heartbreak; and acknowledging the calls for oversight. She deserves thanks for responding directly; especially when so many others have chosen silence. Meanwhile… Senator Ashley Moody’s response remains unclear; she acknowledged interest in something I never asked about; and it raises the question of whether anyone in Washington is actually focused on the issue in front of them. Because right now… most of them are chasing TV time. Alligator Alcatraz; tax announcements; election season theatrics; anything that keeps them in front of cameras. And while they posture, Florida is already facing a second sloth crisis. MARGATE IS AWAKE… AND FLORIDA SHOULD BE TOO Just weeks after the Orlando tragedy that left more than fifty sloths dead, Margate is now fighting to stop another sloth encounter business from opening. This one is tied to Larry Wallach; a man whose USDA license was canceled; who pleaded guilty to wildlife trafficking; who accumulated more than sixty federal violations; and whose record includes allegations involving electroshocking a juvenile tiger; threatening a dog with an electric prod; lying to inspectors after a child was bitten; and mishandling sloths documented by investigators. Margate residents are organizing; they are showing up; they are refusing to let their city become the next Orlando. The guardrails are collapsing… and bad actors see Florida as a place where they can operate with impunity because talk is cheap and enforcement is inconsistent. Margate is proving that communities do not have to accept that. A REMINDER OF WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR While Florida deals with two sloth crises, the Edinburgh Zoo welcomed a newborn sloth named Atty; named in honor of Sir David Attenborough a few days after his one hundredth birthday. When Sir David was once asked what animal he would choose to be, he answered sloth. Atty’s birth is a reminder that sloths deserve safety; care; and respect… not exploitation; not overcrowded warehouses; not roadside encounters; not the suffering we have seen here. Atty represents what sloths should have… a protected life; a future; and a world that values them for what they are. WHY WE PUSH FOR FIVE HUNDRED Doc Antle of Tiger King infamy was sentenced this week; a reminder that these operators do not stop until the law stops them; and that accountability only arrives when the public refuses to let these stories fade. We will not accept anything less here… not in Orlando… not in Margate… not anywhere in Florida. This is why we need to reach five hundred signatures; this is why we need to keep the pressure on; this is why we need to name and shame the next wannabe before he gets his foot in the door. Florida cannot become the state where exotic animal profiteers come to reinvent themselves after being shut down everywhere else.
