(*English below) APPEL À L’ACTION : ECRIRE AUX MÉDIAS Voici un modèle de lettre à envoyer aux médias français (et ailleurs dans le monde) qui participent à la campagne de diabolisation visant le professeur Tariq Ramadan : À l’attention de l’équipe de rédaction, Je vous écris pour vous exprimer mon profond désagrément et ma profonde déception concernant la manière dont vous avez couvert les récentes accusations et allégations concernant M. Tariq Ramadan, notamment au niveau de sa détention par les autorités judiciaires françaises. Votre responsabilité première est de fournir des informations et des analyses basées sur des sources identifiables et crédibles. Vous avez pourtant relayé une information révélée par une source anonyme ‘proche de l’enquête’ créant une impression que M. Ramadan n’a pas été uniquement accusé de viol, fait qu’il n’a d’ailleurs pas commis, mais dont il a été déclaré coupable. Puis-je vous rappeler que le degré de charges retenues contre lui, le procès et son verdict sont les prérogatives du système judiciaire ? Ce n’est pas votre rôle : vous n'êtes ni procureur, ni juge, ni membre des jurés. Vous avez cependant outrepassé vos fonctions en agissant d’une manière déshonorante pour votre profession. La façon non professionnelle et non éthique avec laquelle vous avez couvert les événements actuels, en déformant notamment des éléments clefs de l’enquête sous-entend que votre réel objectif n’est pas d’informer, mais de désinformer le public. Ce qui contribue certainement à la mauvaise image des médias français d’aujourd’hui. Merci de noter que M. Ramadan n’a pas été placé en détention provisoire. Les avocats de M. Ramadan ont jugé préférable de prendre plus de temps pour répondre aux allégations de la plaignante anonyme. Ces allégations révélées par la même ‘source anonyme’ sont rendues publiques depuis deux jours. Les avocats de Mr Ramadan attendent que vous rétablissiez les faits rapidement. J’insiste, au nom de la justice française, pour que vous rétablissiez la vérité ainsi que l’image préjudiciable de M. Ramadan que vous avez créée de toute pièce par la désinformation. Your first responsibility is to provide accurate information and analysis, based on identifiable and credible sources. This you have failed to do. In fact, you have relayed “information” revealed by an anonymous source “close to the investigation” to create the impression that Mr. Ramadan has not only been officially accused of a crime—which he has not—but that he is guilty. May I remind you that leveling of charges, trial and a verdict of guilt are prerogatives of the judicial system? They are certainly not yours: you are neither prosecutor, judge nor jury. Yet you have behaved, in a manner that dishonors your profession, as though you have usurped those functions. In fact, the unprofessional nature of your coverage, including the distortion of key facts in the case, suggests that your real objective is not to inform, but to misinform, the public. This will certainly further contribute to the discredit with which the media is viewed. Please note as well that Mr. Ramadan has not been placed in pre-trial detention. Mr. Ramadan’s legal team has argued it will need time to respond to the allegations of an anonymous plaintiff. These allegations, revealed to the public by the same anonymous “source,” were made public only two days ago. His legal team intends to seek his rapid release. Mr. Ramadan's lawyers are waiting for you to re-establish the facts quickly. I insist, in the name of elementary justice, that you take immediate steps to correct the prejudicial image of Mr. Ramadan that you have created.
