The Issue

I am reaching out to everyone who believes in the sanctity of life and the principles of no-kill shelters to support this cause. Recent events at Animal Haven in North Haven, Connecticut, have sparked outrage and disbelief among animal rights advocates and compassionate citizens.  https://www.wfsb.com/2025/03/09/north-haven-animal-shelter-faces-backlash-amid-euthanasia-protests/

Sarge, a beloved dog, was killed after he bit a volunteer—a regrettable incident, but one that has raised serious concerns about the practices of a shelter that identifies as "no-kill.".   He was then beheaded and his brain sliced up for rabies testing, a mutilation that is medically unnecessary in the 21st century.   He and the staff member were vaccinated.  Yes the bite was level 5, meaning the bite required extensive surgery, but one has to question what mistake lead to the bite.  Instead Sarge was killed and beheaded.   The shelter defends their decision.

Many of us believe that a no-kill shelter should stand by its foundational promise to safeguard the lives of animals, even when behavioural challenges arise. This is not just about Sarge; it's about ensuring a safe haven for all animals who find themselves in these shelters.

The decision to euthanize Sarge, especially after he was vaccinated, underscores the need for procedural transparency and the exploration of all possible alternatives before resorting to such irreversible measures. Desmond's Army and the Save Simon movement, alongside other activists, gathered to voice their discontent and advocate for change. It is crucial that these shelters remain true to their mission and explore options like behavioral training and relocation to sanctuaries willing to accommodate animals like Sarge.

There are facilities capable of housing dogs with behavioral issues, providing them with the appropriate care they need for a dignified life. The actions taken by Animal Haven have cast a shadow over the no-kill label, eroding public trust and threatening the future of animals like Sarge. Furthermore, the euthanasia was compounded by Sarge being beheaded for rabies testing, despite available live tests—an act that only adds to the tragedy.  There are cruelty free alternatives.  https://rapidliverabiestest.wordpress.com/

Let's stand together to ensure that no-kill shelters remain what they were intended to be: safe harbours for animals in need. By signing this petition, you join us in demanding procedural revisions at Animal Haven and similar shelters nationwide. Your support can make a difference, ensuring that every animal has access to the life-saving care they need.

Please sign this petition to hold no-kill shelters accountable to their promise and to protect innocent lives from unnecessary harm.
