August 31st, 2015 marked the two year anniversary of Puppy Doe’s death. After having been tortured for months, she was found barely alive and had to be euthanized due to the brutal nature of her injuries. That horrible and tragic event changed my life forever. That may sound overly dramatic to some, but for me, hearing that a little puppy was found mutilated in a children's playground in my hometown was a momentous wake up call. Having been casually involved in animal welfare for most of my life, I knew the time had come to put my passion into action in a big way. As all 400,000 of you know, Kiya who later become known as Puppy Doe was rehomed on Craigslist, thus leading to her nightmare. After her story made the news, I started this petition asking Craigslist to change their policies on pet ads which we felt could help to make online rehoming more secure. Now, after several written communications sent to them including one from two local animal welfare attorneys, they still refuse to engage in a dialogue with us. Regardless of what one company decides to do (or not do in this case) it falls on us - you, me and others like us, who have compassion for the innocent and helpless to take swift and decisive action in large numbers to prevent another Puppy Doe incident from ever happening again. With that goal and purpose in mind, I would like to introduce you to a new organization we have created named FEND. FEND, an acronym for Foster, Educate, Network, Defend, is a 501 © (3) Nonprofit organization established to protect and improve the lives of all pets in every shape or form. To meet our goal(s) we will utilize the latest web-based technology and grass-root community events to build an army of human "watchdogs". In addition to our community efforts, we are currently working on several innovative programs, products and services to help pet parents, pets, animal shelters, and rescue groups. Our flagship project will be a cutting-edge web-based adoption and networking platform designed to help secure and improve the animal adoption process, making the rehoming of pets more safe and effective.
