Justice for Our Beloved Mother: Grant Her Rightful Burial in Her Community

The Issue

On Wednesday, August 30, 2023,  Alice "Sallie" Mae Garrison passed away. It is with heavy hearts that we write this petition to seek justice for her and to ensure that she receives the proper burial she deserves.

For 82 years Sallie faithfully attended the same church, First Baptist Church of Hollins, in Roanoke, VA. Sallie was a devoted member of her church, she formed and directed church choirs. She was, some would say, the backbone of the musical department- she led the choir as a soloist for many years of her dedicated attendance.

Though Sallie was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Hollins, the church pastor has denied her the right to buried in its cemetery. Sallie was a faithful church member until her health failed. She was removed from the church roll without proper notification and later her family was informed that she was not a member of the church and her remains are not allowed to buried in their cemetery.

It is crucial to highlight that our beloved mother's absence from regular church attendance was not by choice but due to her failing health. She longed to attend services regularly but physical limitations prevented it.

We firmly believe that  it is an injustice and a gross act of  discrimination that a religious institution has denied its member the right of burial. Her entire family that preceded her in death is buried in the cemetery. Only five months ago her beloved sister was buried there.

Our beloved mother’s unwavering faithfulness and dutifulness to her church throughout the decades has ended in utter and shear disrespect rendered by the attending church pastor.

By signing this petition today, you will help send a powerful message to the church pastor of his shameful and discriminatory act towards the elderly and the sick, the ones whom he was called to protect from such atrocities.

Our goal is to bury our mom in her rightful place, a place where she grew up and a place where she worshipped and was adored by those who knew her.

We are reaching out to a compassionate and understanding group of people that will support us in getting our mom to her rightful resting place.

Together, we can ensure that she rests in peace where she rightfully belongs.

Sincerely,

The Garrison Family
