Justice for Moose
Apr 11, 2016
Hello Justice for Moose supporters, Last week (April 6) was the court hearing to review the defense's motion to sever charges. Basically Mikah Johnson's defense lawyers were trying to have 7 separate trials for each animal cruelty charge. The jurors would not know about the other charges so would not get a complete picture of the systematic torture and abuse Moose suffered through. The defense argued that hearing all the charges at once would make the jury prejudiced against Johnson since if they found him guilty of one charge, they are more likely to find him guilty of all the other charges. Luckily the judge denied the motion so there will be just one trial for all 7 counts of animal torture/cruelty and 1 count of domestic violence. There will be a pre-trial hearing on June 17 at 2 PM Mountain Time. The defense will likely submit many motions (which must be filed by June 10) to limit the evidence and testimony which can be presented to the jury and the hearing on June 17 basically sets the rules of the trial. The trial has been scheduled for June 27-29. Once all the evidence has been presented the jury will meet and render a verdict. It is not known how long the jury will take to reach a verdict. If Johnson is found guilty there will be a sentencing hearing at a later date (most likely). Please share our petition, we hope to have at least 25,000 signatures by the time of sentencing.
