One big thing we noticed is that the neighbor discussed in the media reports lived in the same apartment as Mikah Johnson and his girlfriend. The neighbor is also likely very young so it is somewhat understandable that she would be too terrified to call police or confront Johnson due to living in the same residence as him. We are not condoning her lack of action; only that it is a bit more understandable. The biggest lesson to learn from this tragedy is that 911 is not just for people. If you suspect animal abuse or neglect please call 911- it could save a life. Here is a more detailed timeline that details Moose's torture and death. All events occurred at an apartment in Salt Lake. July 13, 2015- Johnson kicked Moose down the stairs and Moose cut his chin. Johnson is charged with a Class B misdemeanor cruelty to an animal for this incident. July 20- Johnson beat Moose for 45 minutes late at night, keeping their two roommates awake. They told Johnson's girlfriend about it the next day. Johnson's girlfriend found a napkin covered with blood, blood spatter on the carpet, and carpet cleaner. Moose was subdued and his eyes were red. Johnson is charged with a Third Degree Felony Torture of a Companion Animal for this incident. July 26- Johnson took Moose for a walk with their other dog, Ottie (note that Ottie has been removed from Johnson's care). Johnson claimed that Ottie dragged Moose and that Moose was unconscious and he gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation. Johnson's girlfriend noticed that the inside of Moose's legs were scraped and he was having trouble walking. He sneezed blood all night. Johnson's girlfriend took Moose to the vet the next day. Johnson is charged with a Class B misdemeanor cruelty to an animal for this incident. August 14- Johnson's girlfriend found Moose in his kennel and discharge coming from his eyes and nose. He couldn't open his eyes. There was Lysol sitting on top of the kennel. Johnson claimed he found Moose unconscious under the bed in a spider web. Johnson's parents took Moose to a vet the next day and the vet asked them if Moose had been sprayed in the face with anything toxic. The vet said Moose was missing most of corneal epithelium and that he may have been sprayed in the eye with something caustic. Johnson is charged with a Third Degree Felony Torture of a Companion Animal for this incident. August 18- Johnson's girlfriend took Moose to a follow up vet visit. She told the vet that she believed Moose was sprayed in the eyes with Lysol. The vet told her that was what he suspected. After they got back from the vet she left Moose alone with Johnson for a half hour and got a text from the roommate that Johnson was beating Moose again. The roommate said she heard Moose crying and that Johnson hit him 10-15 times and then it sounded like Moose was being strangled. The roommate did not confront Johnson because she was terrified of him because he was mentally unstable and got very angry. Johnson's girlfriend rushed back and found Moose in his kennel with his tail stuck in the door. She took him out and he wasn't breathing. She rushed him to the nearest vet and the vet confirmed Moose was dead. She then took Moose's remains to an animal pathologist from a necropsy. The necropsy report stated that Moose died from severe pulmonary hemorrhage. There were two episodes of recent blunt force trauma that caused the hemorrhaging. His jaw was broken, teeth were missing and fractured. His liver was fractured in two places. His lungs showed extensive hemorrhage and congesting. There was extensive bruising and hemorrhage between Moose's eyes extending towards his spine. His cornea was ulcerated from an irritant like Lysol. The blood tests were negative for distemper or anything else that could have caused pulmonary hemorrhaging. The injuries were not caused by another dog (as Johnson has reportedly claimed), and they were not sustained post-mortem (as Johnson has also reportedly claimed). Johnson is charged with a Third Degree Felony Torture of a Companion Animal for this incident. # justiceformoose #fightanimalcruelty
