I sent an email to Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper, telling her to re-examine the case and charge the security guards with the death of McKenzie. Here is what she said.

“Thank you for your letter. I am sorry that the media reports have served to report this case with half truths causing more questions and doubt to a nation already in pain.

So please let me try to explain what Southfield Chief Hawkins and I explained to community leaders and the public at a press conference six years ago

When we began the investigation of this horrible tragedy six years ago, the Oakland Medical Examiner had already issued his determination of
accidental death.  That was the first hurdle.

So we took the case to President Obama’s Justice Department and asked for assistance. They said they could not take the case, citing “state action” but they did provide a list of independent experts that they used in federal cases .

The expert studied and reviewed the mountain of evidence that was available , including tapes from other views of the incident and the lack of training of the guards who were hourly employees of the mall. They were NOT police officers. They were NOT all white. In fact they actually called Southfield police to come and assist them because they had no authority whatsoever. The dispatcher sent them to the wrong door in this multilevel mall and those extra minutes made the difference between life and death. That report of the expert concluded that the guards were not criminally negligent.

Chief Eric Hawkins and I went to the community leaders, called all of the media and presented these findings to them in a very long and detailed press conference. We had full transparency and answered all questions .

My job whether as a judge or now as a prosecutor is to present the evidence and sometimes it is a very painful process.

I have now sent this case to Michigan’s Attorney General to once again show full and open transparency.

Again, thank you for your thoughtful letter.

Jessica Cooper”
